This type of valve utilises a simple design and is easy to operate. A sphere with a hole running through its entire length in one direction is turned in order to allow flow either through the hole, or to restrict the flow. By turning the inlet of the hole perpendicular to the flow (so the hole inlet and discharge are facing the valve housing) the flow can be stopped entirely. The opening and closing of the valve is achieved by rotating the hole 90 degrees in either direction. Usually the valve is open when the handle is in-line (aligned) with the flow, although there are exceptions to this rule.
