A transformer is an electrical machine that transfers electrical energy between circuits through electromagnetic induction. Purposes of transformers vary depending upon the system served. A ‘step-up’ transformer is used by power stations in order to increase the voltage and reduce the amps, this reduction in amps allows a much smaller cable to be used for distribution (which is a huge benefit when distributing into a grid that could stretch several hundred miles). Other transformers that may be used for voltage regulation include step-down, phase-shifting, machinery (e.g. furnace), traction and instrumentation transformers.

Step-up – The transformer increases the incoming voltage to a higher voltage e.g. the primary incoming voltage is increased from 10 kV to 110 kV.

Step-down – The transformer reduces the incoming voltage to a lower voltage e.g. the primary incoming voltage is reduced from 110 kV to 10 kV.
